A tinédzser Cathrine Chandlerre (Kristin Kreuk, Smallville) és édesanyjára fegyveresek támadnak, és a lánynak végig kell néznie, ahogyan anyját megölik. Cathrine életét csupán egy különös lény közbelépése menti meg. Évekkel később Catherine-ből nyomozó válik, és egy ügy kapcsán ismét összetalálkozik a férfival, akinek életét köszönheti. Catherine megmentője, Vincent Keller szörnyű "betegségben" szenvedő orvos. Ha feldühítik, rémisztő erejét féken tartani képtelen félelmetes szörnyeteggé válik. Vincentről az igazságot eddig csupán J. T. Forbes, a férfi legjobb barátja ismerte. A találkozás után Cat és Vincent között erős vonzalom és mély barátság alakul ki, és Cat tudja, elérkezett az alkalom, hogy végre anyja halálának körülményeiről is többet tudhasson meg.
