Makatsch was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, the daughter of former German national ice hockey team goaltender Rainer Makatsch. She spent several months in New Mexico in 1988 in an effort to improve her English, and later studied politics and sociology at the University of Düsseldorf for four semesters, which was followed by an apprenticeship as a dressmaker until 1994. Her television career started in 1993, when she was hired by music channel VIVA, hosting shows such as Interaktiv and Heikes Hausbesuche; two years later, on August 13 1995, she became the host of the German chart show BRAVO TV, aired by RTL II, a position she kept until summer 1996. In 1997 she started hosting her own weekly, late night show titled Heike Makatsch Show. However, due to bad ratings, it was cancelled after only eight episodes. Makatsch first appeared in a movie in 1996, when she starred in Detlev Buck's Männerpension (English: "Jailbirds"); she received the Bavarian Film Award as most talented young actor for her performance. Since then, she has appeared in several German and English language productions.

As early as age twelve, Axel Stein played several guest roles in television series and appeared in German commercials for the Tamagotchi-like Digimon Virtual Pets. His television career began in 1998 with the series *Hausmeister Krause*. In 2000, he starred as a lead actor in a feature film for the first time in Marc Rothemund’s comedy *Harte Jungs*. In 2001 and 2002, Stein made guest appearances in German television series such as *Der Fahnder* and *SK Kölsch*, and filmed TV movies and feature films including *Schule*, *Die Klasse von ’99*, *Feuer, Eis & Dosenbier*, and *Knallharte Jungs*. During this same period, he produced his first original comedy series for television, *Axel!*. In 2003, the series was further developed and subsequently aired under the title *Axel! will’s wissen*. This was followed by additional roles in feature films such as *Barfuss* (2005) and *7 Zwerge – Der Wald ist nicht genug* (2006). In 2007, he appeared in the film *Kein Bund für’s Leben*. Stein made regular appearances at variety shows and events hosted by colleagues such as Stefan Raab. In 2011, he joined the new cast of the Sat.1 program *Die Wochenshow*. Starting in February 2013, he took on the lead role in the action-comedy film *Turbo und Tacho*—a spin-off of the hit series *Alarm für Cobra 11 – Die Autobahnpolizei*—in which he had previously appeared twice playing the same character. *Turbo und Tacho* served as the pilot film for a standalone television series; however, due to a lack of audience response, the series was never produced. In the following years, Ullmann starred in several minor roles in TV series such as Stahlnetz, Großstadtrevier, and Leipzig Homicide as well as in TV movies such as the drama Albtraum einer Ehe (2001) alongside August Zirner. From 1999 to 2000, he was a cast member of the comedy series Zwei Männer am Herd with Wolfgang Fierek and Florian Fitz. In 2004, Kostja Ullmann made his movie debut in a leading role in Marco Kreuzpaintner's award-winning film Sommersturm (Summer Storm). His performance in the romantic TV drama Heimliche Liebe (Secret Love) about the relationship of a schoolboy and an older woman won Ullmann the Günther-Strack-Fernsehpreis as Best Actor in 2006. In his second movie, Hounded(2006), Ullmann stars in a similar role. Directed by Angelina Maccarone, he plays a young delinquent who engages in an "amour fou" with his probation officer, who is more than 30 years older than he is. The film won a Golden Leopard at the 2006 Locarno International Film Festival. He acted as Hermann Lake in German-Japan collaborated movie Baruto no Gakuen (Ode an die Freude) in 2006.
