A klasszikus történet szerint a Surrey-beli Horsell Commonba hatalmas meteor csapódik, a Föld lakóinak pedig egy eddig ismeretlen faj indokolatlan és ádáz támadásával kell szembenéznie. A káosz közepette George (Rafe Spall) kilép házasságából, és a körülöttük élők rosszallása ellenére új életet kezd Amyvel (Eleanor Tomlinson). Azonban a Föld többi lakójával együtt hamarosan ők is az életükért küzdenek egy idegen invázió fokozódó terrorjával szemben.
