A recent life-changing medical diagnosis has thrown psychologist Joe O'Loughlin off-balance, and he is feeling reckless. When a young woman is found murdered, the unusual manner of her death prompts DS Riya Devi to suggest asking Joe for a professional opinion. Joe is shocked by the sight of the body - but is he just shaken by the brutality of the killing or is there something from his past he's not telling the police?
Joe just can't get the case of the murdered woman out of his head and is convinced there's something sinister at play, with his paranoia leading him to suspect that one of his patients may know something about the killing. Meanwhile, Ruiz and Devi are hunting for new evidence in their case when a surprising breakthrough turns the spotlight back onto Joe, whose marriage is then hit by a bombshell.
The rift between Joe and his wife Julianne sees him at his lowest ebb, but he is still determined to untangle the web he is caught up in. He believes that there's a pattern to be found amongst all the coincidences and a breakthrough sets him on a new path of investigation. Meanwhile, DI Ruiz and DS Devi are newly determined to get justice for Catherine, but their own enquiries have hit a roadblock.
Joe is knocked sideways when an old grudge rears its head and with the police closing in, he flees to his dad's house for sanctuary. Ruiz has a nagging doubt that he is missing something - he just can't put his finger on it, while Joe must dig deep into his own past to understand what is happening in the present.
