1875-ben egy vidéki lány, Denise Lovett egy észak-angliai városba, Newcastle-be érkezik, hogy munkát vállaljon nagybátyja szövetboltjában, aki azonban nem tudja alkalmazni, mivel az utcában nemrég megnyílt fényűző divatáruház, a Paradise jelentette konkurencia miatt így is alig tud megélni. Denise a Paradise női osztályán kap munkát eladóként, és a többi lányhoz hasonlóan neki is meg kell felelnie azoknak a szigorú elvárásoknak, amelyeket az osztály vezetője, Miss Audrey állít eléjük. Denise szeme csakhamar megakad az áruház jóképű tulajdonosa, a nemrég megözvegyült John Moray alakján, aki nemcsak személyiségével, de merész üzleti ötleteivel is lenyűgözi a lányt. Eközben Moray nagyhatalmú befektetője, Lord Glendenning meggyőzésével van elfoglalva, akinek leánya, Katherine arra számít, Moray feleségül fogja venni.
