He and his sister spent time with both parents growing up. He was born in Hyden, Kentucky, United States. Before becoming an actor, Hensley worked on a horse ranch in Wyoming. Though always drawn to storytelling, Hensley did not intend to act before he auditioned for a college play. Although he was not cast, he was hooked. Immersing himself in the school's theater community, he formed an improv group with a few other students. He eventually decided to move to New York, where he met his future manager. His film appearances have included Peoples, Fifty Pills, Teeth, and Shutter.
