In a world where AI is looming larger and ever present, Ann Droid asks the question what is replaceable and what is not? As funny, as it is poignant – Ann Droid tells the story of an unlikely friendship between Sue and Linda a social humanoid robot, created to keep elderly people company and monitor their health.
It's 2029. Sue's husband David passed away 18 months ago and her only son, Michael, is moving out – again - to try and fix his marriage - again. But the good news is he's got Sue a surprise to help her live independently, a care provider with a difference - a second hand AnnDroid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot. Created to keep the ageing population company and monitor their health, taking the pressure off the ever-stretched NHS.
It's Sue's worst nightmare. An overly attentive, socially inept pain in the arse. But she soon works out she can use the droid to her benefit in settling scores and doing the things her son never gets round to. What develops is a buddy comedy between an older woman and her robot who isn't quite as advanced socially as she is technically.

Sue isn't thrilled that Michael is back with Renee (his cheating wife) and turns down an invite to Renee's BJJ graduation ceremony, pretending she has other plans and upsetting Michael in the process. Sue doesn't have any plans, so offers to work in the charity shop to help out Eileen, but it's a disaster. Sue realises she should go and support Michael after all and prove she's still a good mum, but Linda causes chaos.

Linda encourages Sue to join Tom and Eileen on a trip to the seaside to scatter ashes. To cheer themselves up, they decide to go to a funfair, where a fortune teller leaves Sue hoping for a sign from Dave and a promise to try new things, starting with a rollercoaster ride. Meanwhile, Michael's efforts to be a rock star and impress everyone at an open-mic night are totally ruined, thanks to Linda.

Sue has invited Michael and Renee to a nice family dinner in an attempt to play happy families, which means she can't accept Phyllis's invite to her surprise birthday party. Michael and Renee's real motive for coming round is revealed, and things take a turn for the worst. Fortunately, Linda is there to avert tragedy and reveal the biggest shock of the night.

But Linda inadvertently causes chaos at the campsite, and things get worse when they decide to go for a walk to get away from their fellow campers. Meanwhile, Michael gets some life-changing news.

With Michael living back at home and unemployed, he really can't afford Linda anymore, so he decides to return her. Linda had made this week especially busy for Sue as it would have been her 50th wedding anniversary, so she leaves Michael with Sue's itinerary and onward care instructions. But when Sue's friends and Michael all let her down, she questions whether she can live without Linda.
