In the pilot of this sitcom about an unconventional veterinary practice in New York, Dr. George Coleman is dismayed to find out that his ex-girlfriend has inherited the facility and is now in charge of its kooky staff and faunal patients.
When Doug's dog is injured and requires surgery, he tries to persuade George to perform the operation. Meanwhile, Angela's decision to sell Dr. Rizzo's artwork to a gallery does not sit well with the artist; and Dorothy is desperate for the staff to like her after she realizes she hasn't been included in their happy-hour gatherings.
George sees Jill as a threat to his standing at the hospital, so he tries to damage her reputation by sabotaging one of her operations. Meanwhile, Dorothy tries to remain impartial when she judges the facility's annual Halloween contest for pet costumes.
George treats a cockatoo with a possibly fatal habit of eating chocolate, while Doug tries to woo the bird's eccentric owner's socialite granddaughter. Elsewhere, Yamamoto gets the wrong idea when he's the only person to show up for Dorothy's movie night; and the interruption of Angela and Dr. Rizzo's favorite TV show prompts a call to the cable guy, with whom Angela is immediately smitten.
When a Saint Bernard's weight problem and overeating mirror its owner's, George's solution involves shaming the man into more healthful habits, but Dorothy tries a kinder approach. Meanwhile, Dorothy starts a weekly social event for the staff, but it's on the same night that the guys play poker.
