Ravkát, a várost kettészakította egy hatalmas árnyékfal, ami több kilométer hosszú és széles, nem jut át rajta a fény, cserébe tele van szörnyekkel, amelyek előszeretettel gyilkolják az embereket. Kelet- és Nyugat-Ravka gyakorlatilag kettészakad egy gazdagabb és egy szegényebb területre. A főszereplőkön keresztül nagyjából az első rész alatt megismerhetjük a háborús viszonyokat, illetve a ravkai hadsereg összetételét, ami áll az Első hadseregből, ahol a hétköznapi emberek harcolnak, és a Második hadseregből, ahol pedig a grisák. A grisák olyan emberek, akik különböző elemeket felhasználva képesek manipulálni környezetüket. Ebben a világban kering egy legenda, miszerint a nagy, sűrű és gonosz árnyékfalat csak egy különleges képességekkel megáldott grisa tudja majd feloszlatni, a napfény erejével.
