Az „Anglia kertjének” nevezett Kent megye egyik idilli falucskájában és a hatgyermekes Larkin család, amelynek feje, Papus nem megy a szomszédba egy kis furfangért. Amikor megtudja, hogy a megüresedett vadászmester címre gazdag ellenlábasa, Alec Norman feni a fogát, elhatározza, hogy meg fogja találni a módját, hogyan fogja ki a szelet a vitorlájából. Némileg megtöri a lendületet a család nagylányának, Mariette-nek a bejelentése, hogy Franciaországban akar szerencsét próbálni. Edith Pilchester, a vénkisasszony, aki őszinte híve Papusnak, elpanaszolja, hogy egy városi ember azért zaklatja, hogy adja el neki a házát, mire Papus azt tanácsolja, tegyen úgy – de persze ez is csak egy csavaros terv része. A majálison jótékonysági versenyt rendeznek, amelyen Papus nagylelkűen licitál, amíg csak versenyre nem kel vele Alec Norman, és hamarosan felforrósodnak a kedélyek.
